1.
Morning Bells When the morning’s light has come And the distant stars breathe fire All that is is sleeping To the waiting sun When the waking light has died And the morning bells will chime Everything shall listen To the morning’s rhyme When the morning sky unfolds And the waking mind is wired Everything shall listen For the Great I Am Touch the sky and paint it bright Catch the stars and melt them down Ancient fire releasing Being all around
2.
What Is Love? You always thought that love was a fairy tale Told to complete the sale Where does your mind go now, Now that you know it’s real? Given time and a second chance You take the time for a second glance at The desire within To replace the grace you used to feel What is love? What is love? Will you find your way too late? Or will you find a heart to share? What kind of love is in your fate? Listen, you may You may learn, if you dare If you dare, if you dare, if you dare What is love? What is love? What is love? What is love?
3.
Moonlight On the Tree When the time of darkness comes Calling into the void Thoughts and dreams are scattered wide Falling into the void Reason dissolves in light And shines In the day of endless night Arising into the light Love has no form Spirit defines what is offered in being Everything that you have learned is a hoax Conjured to coax you to a way of being Align, always align, never define Sunlight sinking into sand Melting all reprimand Shaking all evil free Moonlight upon the tree Stones cast their shadows From the firelight Gods issue their commands Playing upon the sands Dust into dust Salt into sand, as you reach into being Worthless is everything that you had thought When you were caught in the small way of being Align, always align, never define.
4.
Of the Son 03:42
Of the Son Peace: Searching for peace Like so much golden fleece What could it mean to you now if you found it? Grace: Floating in space Another forgotten face How will you know what it is when you find it? Will you mind it? Or pass by? When you find it, will you mind it or pass by? Love: ladies and turtle doves, Feeling the good above Who would you trust with your heart if you found it? Hope: Dangling from a rope, Watching the darkness grow Sinking so slow as you know you are bound up To the sky above To the perfect love Of the Son You are bound up To the sky above To the perfect love Of the Son
5.
Running Blind Running blind through the wild of the night, Wild beasts dwell nearby Losing sight of the signs that alight, Ancient paths buried nearby Give me signs, warning signs, danger signs, Alert my mind Give me signs, simple signs, any signs, Relieve my mind Scared child, running blind, what is the secret you hope to find? Scared child, running blind, what is the secret you hold inside? They’re gonna let you run till they catch you They’re gonna let you fall They’re gonna let you run till they catch you They’re gonna let you fall to your knees The cryptic characters, randomly strewn like pebbles Uttering babble of war The scattered love letters of fellow travelers Left in the hovels of war Right where you stood before
6.
Time’s Collapse Another hazy Sunday laying in the grass Another false measure from first to last Another crosswind that’s blowing through the pass Waiting for time’s collapse Waiting for time’s collapse Accepting that you will never pass the test Accepting that you are all-powerless Accepting everything you cannot address Waiting for time’s collapse Waiting for time’s collapse Waiting for time’s collapse Lost to the Midwestern sky Lost when you ceased to cry Lost when you learned to tell the lie Lost, will your spirit die? Reflecting on the mornings wandering alone Reflections of the faces pressing down like stone Rejecting all the rotten meat for the bones Waiting for time’s collapse Waiting for time’s collapse Waiting for time’s collapse Lost to the Midwestern sky Lost when you ceased to cry Lost when you learned to tell the lie Lost, will your spirit die?
7.
The Shootout 02:44
The Shootout When the shootout is done And everybody is on the ground And the western sky has got a hole in it Where the blood runs down It’s a bad day for the man who won Hitch up and circle your wagons round, Grab those doggies let’s blow this town Bet you could have stood if you were a little bit older Bet you could have won if your heart was colder You’re in a game of Twenty-One And you take another hit And the outlaw calls your bluff, Screaming, “we call it Blackjack!” And he beats you to the gun Hitch up and circle your wagons round, Grab those doggies let’s blow this town Bet you could have stood if you were a little bit older Bet you could have won if your heart was colder

Lord of Guile No simple answers No simple questions are brought here To the Lord of Smiles, merrily he chides To the Lord of Guile, merrily he glides into his wiles Dreaming sideways, Dancing in praise Tongue-tied halfway down, Reaching underground No single answer No single pronouncement can make it clear When the Lord of Smiles finally decides to remove disguises When the Lord of Guile, castigating while returning from exile, rises Dreaming sideways, Dancing in praise Tongue-tied halfway down, Reaching underground
9.
House of Cards When the sun comes up, and you are sitting at the table And the paper cup that you are holding to your chin Begins to crumble from the weight of the heavy syrup That you have been content to drown your coughing in As the story ends, and you are waiting for the punchline To a joke the hero told on the road to fame Just remember you are standing on the breadline And that the future of the world is cloaked in shame You bow down, to the ground, you fall in, God calling And as the sun goes down, you shuffle into the automobile All set to carry you away to the sunset palace A pot of gold sits at the curb on every corner As you await another sip from the crystal chalice Welcome to the House of Cards, won’t you stop and take a seat House of mirrors’ broken shards, where we take our spirits neat Come and see the pleasures that confusion oft will reap Come into the House of Cards the stairs collapse as Time elapses, all is lost to the Ace of Spades. You bow down, to the ground, you fall in, God is calling

Remembering (Ghosts) Remembering what was done Remembering what is gone Remembering all the people Remembering everything, as you run from the ghosts There are ghosts, they’re inside of you Ghosts, they want everything inside of you Ghosts, they let you know that they won’t hide from you Lost amongst the ghosts, as they deride you They’ll haunt you They’ll remember you They’ll let you be in their time Remembering photographs (They’re not just pictures) Remembering wrong, perhaps (From forgotten scriptures) Remembering every feeling (They never leave you) Remembering every dealing (That you’ve had with the ghosts) There are ghosts, they’re inside of you Ghosts, they want everything inside of you Ghosts, seductive ghosts, they won’t hide from you Lost amongst the ghosts, what has died in you? They’ll want you They’ll yearn for you They’ll let you be in your time

Dogs Barking 03:31
Dogs Barking Oh won’t you lay me down, won’t you take me down, Oh won’t you set me down where the dewdrops never dry Where the clouds dance in the sky I want a summer day that never goes away and everything you say Is like an offering to the sky, and the birds that are passing by It’s then I hear the sounds of the dogs barking Time to go home, where I’ll start to dream again There is no life where I come from, there are no simple answers to the questions that you ask, everything is made of glass And when the heart resides in a chamber lined with papers you tend to believe what you read about, the mind is cast in doubt Words: what have you got but words? What have you ever heard That you could take and make into love, break into love Deeds: lost in the garden weeds, scattered about like seeds-- How can you tell the good from bad when you want love? Oh won’t you lay me down, won’t you take me down, Oh won’t you set me down where the sad souls never cry, And the clouds go drifting by And where the heart resides a tender love abides, I want to feel the sky and take an eagle for a ride in the waning light It’s then I hear the sounds of the dogs barking Time will make a way for me to start to dream again

Adrift 02:52
Adrift Drifting along, played like a song Head to tail wind, struck like a gong Relentlessly shattered by sound, Mercy is bound Stripped to the threads of the sail cloth you’ve worn Laid on display with your bow bent and shorn Tossed in the fray with the waters, you’re torn Drifting, drifting along Drifting along, played like a song Head to tail wind, struck like a gong Relentlessly shattered by sound, Mercy is bound Paled by the storm, never to forget Seasons of doubt, reasons to regret Beast to the East, torrents to the West Drifting, drifting along Drifting along, played like a song Head to tail wind, struck like a gong Relentlessly shattered by sound, Mercy is bound

about

The Shattering Box is a collaboration across time between me and my younger self. Music for 11 of the 12 songs was written and recorded to cassette from 1986 to 1988. The initial drafts of the lyrics and melodies were written while I was digitizing these early instrumentals 30 years later, in the spring of 2017.

The album explores the human challenges of spirituality and the spiritual challenges of being human, and is divided into two six-song EPs, as reflected in the song sequence. The first six songs are The Shattering Box; songs 7 through 12 are House of Cards.

I am extraordinarily grateful to the creative and inspired team of artists who generously offered their time and talents to make this project come to life.
